Panthers put tag on center Kalil

October 29, 2011
By Pat YasinskasThe Carolina Panthers continue to be the only NFC South team making news so far Tuesday. Our John Clayton reports the Panthers have placed the franchise tag on center Ryan Kalil.

That move should lock Kalil in at a one-year salary of about $10.5 million unless he and the team can work a long-term deal. I wouldn’t read too much into the fact the Panthers put the tag on Kalil, instead of defensive end Charles Johnson or running back DeAngelo Williams. This isn’t necessarily about playing ability. It’s more about protecting who the Panthers want to keep.

The Panthers must feel pretty confident about their ability to re-sign Johnson, who had 11.5 sacks last season. I also expect them to at least make an effort to re-sign Williams when a new labor agreement is finalized. Even if the Panthers don't sign Johnson or Williams, they have some decent alternatives at their position.

But the Panthers avoided some very big danger by putting the tag on Kalil. He’s become a Pro Bowl regular and is just hitting his prime. If he had hit the open market, he could have set a new salary bar for centers. This move gives Carolina more time to work on a deal that will keep Kalil for the long term. Keeping Kalil also means Carolina's offensive line should be a strength. The Panthers don't have a legitimate replacement for Kalil. With him on a line with tackles Jeff Otah and Jordan Gross and guard Travelle Wharton, the Panthers should be set up front.Share

Panthers to get another look at Newton

October 28, 2011
By Pat YasinskasWe’ve got a list of notable pro day workouts around the country over on our NFL Nation blog.

But the day that jumps out most to me is Tuesday. That’s when Auburn has its pro day. Carolina coach Ron Rivera already has said he’ll be there and I’m sure he’s going to have a ton of company from his coaching staff and front office.

There’s a decent chance that Carolina could use the No. 1 overall pick on an Auburn player. Quarterback Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fa...

No hardware, but AFC East rookies solid

October 25, 2011
Winners for the Associated Press 2010 Rookies of the Year will be announced Friday. Both appear to be foregone conclusions.

What a shock it would be if St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh didn't represent his side of the ball.

Still, it's an appropriate time to recognize a few remarkable rookie campaigns in the AFC East.

Belichick guided the Patriots to another division title and an NFL-best 14 victories despite challenging circumstances detailed on the AFC East blog Wednesday morning.

While Belichick had the benefit of Brady at quarterback, the Patriots went through a transitional phase both offensively and defens...

Leon Washington, Devin Hester in spotlight

October 22, 2011
Getty ImagesDevin Hester, left, and Leon Washington have made a huge impact on special teams this season.RENTON, Wash. -- Leon Washington says there's much more to the impending Seattle-Chicago divisional playoff game than a battle for "SportsCenter" air time between two of the NFL's elite return men.

He's right, too.

This game Sunday in Chicago goes deeper than Washington and the Bears' Devin Hester. It's also about the men blocking for them and, in a surprise, even the women who have their ba...

Lem Barney makes consolation call to Reed

October 22, 2011
By Tim GrahamLem Barney called Sunday afternoon to talk about Andre Reed's inability to break into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Barney has been one of Reed's biggest supporters for enshrinement in Canton.

Reed was the only wide receiver to make the cut from 15 to 10 finalists Saturday, but the Buffalo Bills star wasn't among the five players put to a final vote.

"I try to keep him encouraged," Barney told me. "I'm going to call Dre as soon as I get off the phone with you to tell him not to giv...

Garrard plan for lockout encouraging

October 14, 2011
By Paul KuharskyINDIANAPOLIS -- We're late catching up on this Gene Frenette piece on David Garrard, who said some encouraging things about his plans for the Jaguars if NFL players are locked out.

“We’re going to make sure all those guys still under contract are going to get workouts in,” Garrard said. “We’ve been meeting as leaders. We met with the coaches a few times to get ideas of how to keep this team rolling [in event of an owner lockout]. We’re not taking the whole offseason...
